Do you have a lottery strategy and is it successful?

If you scour the many books, or the internet, that show you strategies on to use strategies to win the lottery, it is a good idea to take these strategies with more than a grain of salt. Lottery results are always random and any strategy cannot change that fact. Here are some the are guaranteed not to work.

A look at some lottery systems and strategies

The Wheeling System

The Wheeling System is a strategy that uses math to supposedly increase the odds of winning a prize on the lottery. To use the wheeling system, all you have to do is pick your set of numbers eg 6/49 game) from the 49 and your bonus number from the 49 and play all possible combinations of those numbers. So for a typical 6/49 game with a bonus numbers, you would need to buy a lot of tickets to play this strategy. Not very money efficient as a strategy goes, since their is no guarantee any of those seven-number combinations will ever get drawn.

Analyzing Previous Lottery Numbers

The premise of this strategy is to analyze previous lottery numbers that have been drawn, and select your numbers from the following criteria:

  • Select numbers that are long overdue: These are the numbers that haven’t been drawn in quite a while so, supposedly, are more likely to show up on the next draw. Always try to play numbers that haven’t been drawn in over a year. Nope. Every number has exactly the same change of being drawn for every draw.
  • Avoid using “cold” numbers: These numbers are ones that are drawn less frequently or the number of times they’ve been drawn is way below average. Therefore, these numbers have very little chance of showing up on the next draw. Again, same thing as above.
  • Use “hot” numbers: These are numbers that have been drawn the most over a period of a year. It means that these numbers are more likely to be selected on the next draw. Why? Since every number has the exact same chance of being selected, then a “hot” number has no bearing if it will or will not be drawn on the next game.

Buying Lottery Tickets at Different Times

In using this strategy, you never buy all your lottery tickets in one day. You buy one or two today, then a few more tomorrow, and then some more the next day. This way the lottery system isn’t seeing an entire set of tickets being purchased all at once and use that as a way to skewer the draw results. And also mix up where you buy your tickets. Spread them out over several retailers on different times and dates. A lot of work for nothing. When or where you buy your tickets has no influence on the lottery results.

Playing the Same Combination Over and Over

This is one of the easiest and most popular lottery strategies that people use: Simply pick a set of lucky numbers and play them every time you buy tickets. Popular dates to play include birth dates, anniversaries, or simply numbers that "feel" lucky. No. Playing the same numbers for every draw again does not influence the results. There is no advantage of playing the same numbers versus playing random numbers.

Always avoid picking numbers between 1–31

These numbers correspond to dates of birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Since they are likely to be played by other people, this will increase your odds of having to split a prize if you do win, robbing you of the full prize money. What? Who cares if you have to split? And anyway, buy not playing the numbers 1-31, you are limiting your ability to have a full chance of hitting drawn numbers.

How you play is obviously up to you, but don’t let “strategies” guide you into what you should or shouldn’t do. Always play the way you want to play and how you do it is entirely up to you.
