Lottery superstitions and how they affect your lottery play

When it comes to playing the Powerball, or any other lottery, a lot of us are superstitious about how we pick our numbers. Even though we know that these games are games of chance and luck, that doesn’t stop us from looking for as much luck as we can muster.

There are firm believers of numerology, for example. Lottery players translate this into concocting a set of lucky numbers. These numbers could be anything from birthdays and anniversaries to your cat’s coming home day.

And then there are those players who avidly avoid certain numbers that they feel are unlucky. It’s usually numbers like 13. Yet, the French consider 13 a very lucky number and often include it when playing the lottery.

So, what other superstitions affect how people play Powerball? Let’s take a look.

1. It’s All a Little Odd

Chinese custom suggests that the world lives by two principles, that of Yin and Yang. Even numbers represent Yin, which belongs to humans, while odd numbers belong to the gods and represent Yang. The superstition goes that if you choose all odd numbers, you will anger the gods.

2. Staying Away from Certain Numbers

As we mentioned, there are some numbers that a lot of players are superstitious about, considering them unlucky and avoiding them at all costs.

Believe it or not, numbers 1 to 6 have been said that in prior years, tens of thousands of people picked these numbers, all over the world. As a result, the Division 1 prize would end up broken down into a tiny jackpot, shared amongst many, many players.

Plenty of us avoids that dreaded number 13, too. While the French may consider it lucky, there is that story of a French woman who switched her usual lottery numbers on Friday 13, and, as you can guess, her usual numbers won the big jackpot.

3. License to Pick Powerball Numbers

We all feel excited and somewhat lucky when we get our first car and first license. There are players who like to use their license plate or license number for their lottery pick. Since license numbers aren’t limited to being under a particular number like anniversary and birthday numbers are, it’s a pretty neat tactic.

4. Black Cat Luck

You might have heard of people passing their Powerball lottery tickets over the back fur of a black cat. Sure, black cats are associated, often, with bad luck. But since they’re not crossing the street when you’re running your lottery tickets over them, it’s considered all good.

5. Direction Tradition

There are those lottery players who attach a great deal of value to the direction of things. Yes, that’s right, direction as in right and left. One particularly popular lottery superstition is that of entering a shop from where you plan to purchase your lottery ticket by stepping into the store with your left foot first.

But things are different when it comes to receiving your Powerball tickets from the seller. When the seller hands you the tickets, superstition dictates that it is preferred that they hand it over with their right hand.

How Will You Pick Your Next Powerball Combo?

You’ve got to love superstitions, especially some of the more interesting ones we mentioned here. It’s not just Powerball players that hang onto crazy and often insane superstitions. Gamblers and sports bettors, do it, too.

If you’ve never tried any of these superstitions, do you think you might just run your tickets over the back of a black cat or avoid angering the gods the next time you purchase your Powerball tickets?
